Naomi Campbell joins Anohni for Drone Bomb Me and the results are nothing short of stunning, haunting and moving.
Tears fall down Naomi’s face as she mouths the sacred lyrics from the first track of Anohni’s latest album, HOPELESSNESS. As the English model maintains an aura of seduction and poise, scenes of writhing dancers flash, their movements almost disturbed-like. There is true beauty in pain.
In a BBC Radio 1 interview, the crooner stated, “it’s a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan, say a 9-year-old girl whose family’s been killed by a drone bomb. She is kind of looking up at the sky and she’s gotten herself to a place where she just wants to be killed by a drone bomb too.”
The track illustrates eerie infatuation as Anohni sings the words of an orphaned Afghani.
“Choose me / Let me be the one /The one that you choose tonight”
Throughout the track, Anohni plays with ambiguity, comparing the way the girl perceives the drone to someone wanting their love to be reciprocated.
The track is an honest and candid reference to acts of terror and the horror it brings to children and adults alike. The dark emotive voice of Anohni sings over synths of the young, distressed girl. The video, likewise, is a work of art, conveying deep desperation and raw emotion.
